Le Conditionnel

Used for 'would' statements, polite requests, and hypothetical situations. Combines future stems with imparfait endings.

How to Form the Conditional

Future stem + imparfait endings

manger + ais = mangerais (I would eat)

Same endings as imparfait, but added to the future stem (infinitive or irregular stem)

Polite requests

Je voudrais un café

I would like a coffee

Hypothetical situations

J'achèterais une maison

I would buy a house

Giving advice

Si (If) Clauses - Important!

Si + IMPARFAIT, CONDITIONAL

Si j'avais de l'argent(imparfait),j'achèterais une voiture(conditional)

If I had money, I would buy a car

Si j'étais riche(imparfait),je voyagerais(conditional)

If I were rich, I would travel

Si tu travaillais plus(imparfait),tu réussirais(conditional)

If you worked more, you would succeed

Remember: NEVER use conditional in the si clause itself!
