How Task A Works

You receive a picture card based on one of the IGCSE topics with 12 minutes of preparation time. The examiner then asks 5 questions in a fixed order. You need to speak clearly, use varied language, and show you can handle different tenses.

The 5 Question Types

Description

Describe the whole picture

Start with 'Dans cette image, je vois...'

Describe foreground then background

Mention the atmosphere

Use 'il y a', 'on peut voir', 'on dirait que'

Specific Detail

~30 secondsPresent tense

Describe a specific person or detail

Describe appearance: hair, clothes, expression

Say what they are doing

Comment on their mood/attitude

Use adjectives for detail

Past/Future Hypothesis

~45 secondsPast OR Future tense (check the question!)

What happened before or will happen after

Read the question carefully - past or future?

Use 3-4 different verb forms

Use 'Je pense que...' and 'Peut-être que...'

Tell a mini-story with sequence words

Personal Opinion

Give and justify your opinion

State your opinion clearly

Give reasons with 'parce que'

Use a personal example

Acknowledge another viewpoint with 'Cependant...'
