Back to Speaking Overview

Pronunciation & Fluency

Master the sounds that make your French convincing. You don't need a perfect accent, just clear and consistent pronunciation.

Grade 8/9 Tip

You do NOT need a perfect French accent. A UK English accent is completely acceptable. What matters is that French sounds are consistently correct and your speech is intelligible.

What is this sound?

A guttural sound from the back of the throat, like a gentle gargle. Nothing like the English 'r'.

Mouth Position

Tongue stays flat and low. The back of the tongue rises toward the soft palate (uvula). Air vibrates in the throat, not the front of the mouth.

Example Words

Minimal Pairs - Hear the Difference

'r' vs 'l' - rue (street) vs lu (read)

'r' vs 'l' - roue (wheel) vs loup (wolf)

Practice Tip: Try gargling water gently - that vibration in your throat is exactly where the French 'r' lives. Don't roll it like Spanish!
